Must See Asheville. The Biltmore Estate is definitely the reason why my husband and I visited Asheville. Even though we stayed off property, we could have easily spent the weekend at one of the on-site hotels and been entertained by all the venues and amenities available.
There are plenty of restaurants and shops to experience. We visited the Estate on a Friday. We are glad we arrived early as there is plenty to see. Shout out to the fantastic and friendly staff! We visited the South Terrance and enjoyed dramatic views of the landscape and Biltmore property. We also visited the Stable Courtyard and visited shops before waiting to enter the house. There was a short line to enter the house, but being a weekday, it was not that long and we probably entered the house around AM.
The house is beautifully curated and the audio tour is very informational. I noticed some visitors exited after walking on the main floor and upstairs to see the bedrooms. I would highly recommend walking through the rest of the house as you paid for the tour and the downstairs of the home is just as fascinating.
We had an excellent lunch before walking to the gardens. Please plan at least an hour for the gardens as there is so much to see! Between the house and the gardens, you can spend the entire day at the actually Biltmore house and gardens. Our ticket also included a complimentary wine tasting.
Definitely make reservations for this as early as you can as they fill up fast. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. A Nice One Time Experience. Biltmore Estate seems to be a 'must see' when visiting Asheville. We did enjoy our tour, although tickets are very overpriced. The tour keeps insisting you can walk the grounds after the tour of the house. But, the Conservatory was a huge disappointment,as well as the grounds.
There is nothing but walking, walking and more walking, but nothing much to see for your time and trouble. The Estate was enjoyable, and the architecture remarkable!!! We would definitely recommend doing the 'wine tasting' over in Antler Hill also on the grounds, but you would need to drive yourself We enjoyed that and of course, purchased several bottles of wine. Overall, it is a one time thing for a visitor, and you much get the audio to understand the history of the house.
Everyone kept telling us to order tickets online, for discounted tickets, but that is not necessarily true. We just went to the Guest house to purchase our tickets on the day we chose, and received an available discount.
Just a note: The house itself is very dark, and the curtains are drawn so were comfortable shoes, and if you do not want to take the many stairs necessary, there is an elevator. Beautiful Estate - a must see! This beautiful estate is a "must see. The audio sets are wiped down after each use, for the COVID concerned, and entry is carefully limited to avoid excess crowding. I visited in the summer, and apparently there are more rooms open in the spring and fall when it is cooler, as the building doesn't have air conditioning, so I will return to see the other rooms.
Despite that, there are many rooms that reflect the Vanderbilts life at the estate. The gardens are magnificent, as is the conservatory.
I spent 4 hours there and didn't have time to walk down to the lake or to see the winery. I highly recommend visiting over a 2 day period so that you can see everything. The food shops next to the estate provide good food at a variety of price points, and there is an excellent confectionary shop. I can't say enough good things about this visit.

We were treated to the arrival of a 40 ft Christmas tree on a draft horse drawn wagon driven by a Victorian Santa. Thousand of people attended.
This year, due to unscientific Covid virtue signaling, the event was held virtually — yuck. The Bistro did not allow off-the-menu ordering only a three course prix fix dinner. The tour was audio only and we were herded like cattle through the mansion.
On the positive side the decorations, and rooms were spectacular, and several rooms had live musicians playing Yuletide classics. In BC we had a small group with a live guide of whom we could ask questions in a small group of less than 20 people for half the price. The pass allowed us to visit on Sunday Morning and we walked from the mansion to Antler Hill village along the beautiful French Broad River where we again confronted with Covid restrictions requiring reservations for wine tasting.

Yes there is no place like Biltmore at Christmas, but you will miss the peak of the lovely gardens. I suggest touring the garden before your entry time if you have a later arrival time.
There are also no public restrooms inside so plan accordingly. While the audio provided some interesting information, you may find it helpful to research the home and family ahead of time.
